The non-GM pea variety has been approved for sale in Europe and the introduction of a GM pea is not expected.
NUTRALYS® and other pea ingredients from Roquette are extracted from conventional non-GM peas.
NUTRALYS® Pea protein is a vegetable protein and thus its taste has a vegetable note, similar to that of soya. It combines very well with salty products and also can be used in sweet products using the appropriate flavor.
Roquette has developed its own process that eliminates most saponine molecules, which are partly responsible for the taste of bitterness in peas. As a result, opportunities in meeting the needs of each type of product formulation become viable, offering better solutions than other pea proteins currently on the market.
Like all proteins, NUTRALYS® Pea protein has a caloric value of 4 Kcal/g (394 Kcal/100g on commercial product).
The amino acid profile of pea protein is well balanced and fulfills the requirements defined by the FAO in 1985 for adults. It is a typical legume protein profile: high in lysine, lower sulphured amino-acids (methionine + cysteine).
This makes pea a very good candidate for complementation of cereals, which are low in lysine and high in sulphured amino-acid. For example, when wheat flour has a low Amino Acid Score (below 45%) the score of a mix of 80% flour and NUTRALYS® pea protein is 100%.
To evaluate protein quality, we need to assess its digestibility and the amino acid profile. Vegetable products often have low digestibility because all the vegetables contain anti-nutritional factors (ex: tannings, complex sugars, antitrypsic factors; etc.).
The digestibility of NUTRALYS® Pea protein is very high (98% measured on piglets). NUTRALYS® Pea protein is a very highly purified ingredient with low anti-nutritional factors thanks to variety selection and process phases. NUTRALYS® Pea protein does not contain complex sugars, which occasionally cause digestive discomfort.
The digestibility of NUTRALYS® is higher than that of whole pea (90%). Therefore its digestibility is comparable to competing animal protein ingredients.
NUTRALYS® Pea protein is not organic, but it is organic compatible, that is to say, in Europe it can be incorporated in the 5% non-organic ingredient authorised in organic products. For the USA, the authorized percentage depends on the final labeling of the product.
There is no legal definition for isolate extracted from pea.
NUTRALYS® pea protein is a highly purified protein ingredient. We recommend that our customers mention "pea protein" on their product labels.
It is 85% protein on average and can be considered as a pea isolate. Soya protein extraction leads to 90% protein isolate, pea protein to 85% because of the higher soya protein content.
NUTRALYS® pea protein is an ingredient to be designated as "pea protein" or "vegetable protein".
The price level is 2 to 4 times lower than that of milk proteins ingredients: whey isolates / concentrates or caseinates and comparable with the best non GM soya proteins.
NUTRALYS® is a protein alternative for food producers who want:
NUTRALYS® can be found in meat and surimi products, snacks & cereals, nutrition bars, gluten-free foods, vegetarian foods, sport and slimming foods, soups and sauces, pasta and biscuits. It is increasingly used as a dairy protein substitute.
NUTRALYS® can be used as:
NUTRALYS® is the vegetable protein, extracted from dry pea (Pisum Sativum) by Roquette in our Vic sur Aisne plant (located in Northern Paris). The extraction is carried out by using water, without chemical solvent. The product is spray-dried and granulated to ensure easy blending and use in food processing.
