Did you know?

Can NUTRALYS® pea protein be non-GM certified?

NUTRALYS® pea protein is extracted from dry pea (Pisum Sativum) generally grown in the North of France (Champagne - Ardennes - Picardy - Normandy).

Only non-GM pea varieties are allowed and the introduction of a GM pea is not expected.

NUTRALYS® and the other pea ingredients from Roquette are extracted from conventional peas.

What is the taste of NUTRALYS® Pea protein?

NUTRALYS® Pea protein is a vegetable protein and thus its taste has a characteristic vegetable note. It combines very well with salty products and also can be used in sweet products using the appropriate flavor.

Roquette has developed its own process that eliminates most saponine molecules, which are partly responsible for the taste of bitterness in peas. As a result, the NUTRALYS® range of products meets the needs of each type of food application, offering better solutions than other marketed pea or soya proteins.

What is the caloric value of NUTRALYS® Pea protein?

Like all proteins, NUTRALYS® Pea protein has a caloric value of 4 Kcal/g (394 Kcal/100g on commercial product).

Does NUTRALYS® Pea protein have a good amino acid profile?

The amino acid profile of pea protein is well balanced and fulfills the requirements defined by the FAO in 2008 for adults. It is a typical legume protein profile: high in lysine and low in sulphur amino acids (methionine+cysteine).

This makes pea an excellent choice for complementation of cereals such as wheat, which has a low lysine and high sulphur amino acid (methionine + cysteine) content.

Vegetable proteins are said to be of lower quality than animal proteins.
What about NUTRALYS® Pea protein ?

To evaluate protein quality, we need to assess its digestibility and the amino acid profile. Vegetable products often have low digestibility because all the vegetables contain anti-nutritional factors (ex: tannings, complex sugars, antitrypsic factors; etc.).

The digestibility of NUTRALYS® pea protein is high (98%) because it is a highly purified ingredient. It contains few anti-nutritional factors thanks to a variety selection and process phases during the manufacturing process. NUTRALYS® Pea protein does not contain complex sugars, which occasionally cause digestive discomfort.

The digestibility of NUTRALYS® is higher than that of whole pea (90%). It is thus comparable to those of the best animal protein sources.

Is NUTRALYS® pea protein an "organic" ingredient?

NUTRALYS® pea protein is not an organic ingredient but it can, under certain conditions, be incorporated into organic foods. In Europe, it can be incorporated up to 5%. For the USA, the authorized percentage depends on the final labeling of the product.

Is NUTRALYS® Pea protein an isolate?

There is no official definition for pea isolate contrary to soya isolate, which contains 90% proteins min.

NUTRALYS® pea protein is a highly purified protein ingredient. It contains 85% proteins on average and can thus be considered as a pea isolate. Soya protein extraction results in a 90% protein isolate, which is due to the higher soya protein content.

We recommend our customers to mention "pea protein" on their product labels.

How should NUTRALYS® Pea protein be labeled?

NUTRALYS® pea protein is an ingredient to be designated as "pea protein" or "vegetable protein".

What is the price of NUTRALYS® Pea protein?

NUTRALYS® pea proteins are highly competitive compared with the other concentrated protein ingredients. The price of NUTRALYS® pea protein is, for instance, 2 to 4 times lower than that of milk proteins ingredients: whey isolates / concentrates or caseinates and comparable with the best non GM soya proteins.

Why should I replace my protein ingredient with NUTRALYS ?®

NUTRALYS® is a protein alternative for food producers who want:

  • To secure their protein supply with a perfectly safe protein source,
  • To maintain their competitiveness by using a cost-effective protein ingredient,
  • To select a non-allergenic, GMO-free and environmentally friendly sources and consequently obtain friendly labeling.

What applications is NUTRALYS® currently used in?

NUTRALYS® can be found in meat and surimi products, snacks & cereals, nutrition bars, gluten-free foods, vegetarian foods, sport and slimming foods, soups and sauces, pasta and biscuits. It is increasingly used as a dairy protein substitute.

What are the properties of NUTRALYS® Pea protein?

NUTRALYS® can be used as:

  • A functional ingredient for emulsifying properties,
  • An efficient source of protein for particular nutritional needs such as sport and slimming foods, gluten-free foods, and also re-balanced everyday foods especially vegetarian foods.
